Why use a Cutting Compound?

Providing a lubricant in a cutting situation seems a little counterintuitive. However, the extreme pressures introduced during the cutting processes wear the tool’s cutting edge. Secondly, the dramatic load changes on the tool’s cutting edge at the point of break-through can cause the tooltip to chip.

The momentary extreme pressure loads can weld a flake of metal to the cutting tool’s edge. As the load is re-applied the uneven cutting-edge chips, breaks-down the cutting edge and the tool is dulled further. In turn, a dull tool requires more pressure to achieve the same cut and further cutting-edge wear occurs.

A cutting compound evens the loads. And the “extreme pressure” lubricant reduces the temperatures at the cutting edge and reduces metal flaking and chipping.

CRTA – Super Lube Cutting Compound is a high-performance, non-staining oil-based solvent made from refined mineral oils. CRTA – Super Lube Cutting Compound is formulated from solvent-refined mineral oil and specialized high-performance extreme pressure (EP) additives and has a “lanolin” base carrier. For overall performance straight-cutting compound contains corrosion inhibitors and extreme pressure lubricants. It can be used on a wide range of metal types. It also contains polymer chemistry to minimize misting.

Super Lube (SL) Cutting Compound is a soft non-staining paste that has been specially formulated for use on all metals. SL is formulated with a proprietary EP additive to reduce heat, give high film strength and improve the dimensional stability of the surface finish during metal working process.
